MevaSearch vs xPrivo: AI search engine vs private AI chat
xPrivo is above all a private, open source AI chat with a search engine added on. MevaSearch is above all a search engine, with AI as a helper. Both put privacy first, but they solve different problems.

Who is behind xPrivo and MevaSearch
xPrivo was created in Luxembourg and is one of the projects of the self funded company Restoflix, alongside CamoCopy. The chat’s code is open source under the AGPL-3.0 licence, so you can audit it and even run it on your own server.
MevaSearch is a Polish search engine developed by WebOrbiton and created by its owner, Igor Oprządek. It focuses on search and is funded only by subscriptions. There are no ads, we do not build user profiles and we do not keep a search history linked to your account.

AI chat or search engine
The heart of xPrivo is the chat. By default it uses open source models such as GPT-OSS, Mistral 3, DeepSeek V3.2 and Llama, run by European partners with a zero logging guarantee. You can also connect your own API keys from OpenAI, Anthropic, Grok and others, or your own models through Ollama. Conversations are organised in workspaces and can be imported and exported.
At MevaSearch, search results come first and AI helps you make sense of them. Every AI feature runs on Claude by Anthropic: short summaries above the results, MevaSearch AI chat, which remembers the conversation and cites a source for each piece of information, related searches and photo search. Requests reach Anthropic from our servers without any account details, and under Anthropic’s commercial terms, data sent through its API is not used to train its models.

Where the results come from
The xPrivo search engine uses the European Search Perspective initiative, an independent European search index, complemented by xPrivo’s own small index. It has two modes: classic results and AI search.
MevaSearch combines results from the Brave Search API with its own Polish index WebAtlas and Wikipedia, and when you want to see more, it adds results from the independent Mojeek index. For technical, scientific or book related queries, specialist sources appear as well, including Stack Overflow, MDN, OpenAlex, Europe PMC, Zenodo, Open Library, Codeberg and the CIRCL vulnerability database for CVE numbers.

The same query in both search engines
We tried the query YouTube. xPrivo showed a good panel with a Wikipedia description at the top, but the first regular result was a sushi restaurant’s website, and youtube.com itself was not among the visible results.
For the same query, MevaSearch shows youtube.com first, with a box for searching YouTube directly and extra links, followed by videos and other pages about YouTube.

Privacy
xPrivo needs no account. Your chat history is stored only locally in your browser, and the company says it does not log prompts or answers. For PRO you get a personal key instead of an account, so you need to keep it safe, because it is the only way to access your plan.
MevaSearch requires an account because it is a paid service, but it does not build a user profile, does not keep a search history linked to your account and shows no ads. On top of that, NetKrypton warns you about scam websites, results are marked when a link is dead, and tracking parameters are removed from links.
Ads and prices
The free xPrivo plan has a daily request limit and includes non personalised ads. xPrivo is also funded by sponsors and affiliate links. The PRO plan costs 9.5 dollars a month plus VAT and gives you 1,500 requests a month, with no daily limits and no ads.
MevaSearch has no free tier with ads. Lite costs 4.99 dollars a month and includes 500 searches and 200 AI answers. Plus costs 14.99 dollars for 1,500 searches, 1,000 AI answers and two extra profiles. Pro costs 24.99 dollars and gives you unlimited searches, 3,000 AI answers and four profiles. The Lite plan comes with a free trial of 3 days, and MevaSearch prices include VAT.
Settings
xPrivo’s search lets you choose the results language (English, French or German), one of more than 30 regions, a time range and specific sources such as Reddit, X, Wikipedia or Le Monde. You can also turn on suggestions and places, and, as experimental features, images, news and sports results next to the results, and decide whether links open in a new tab.
MevaSearch goes further. You can change colours, fonts, layout and background, choose which blocks appear in the results, set how many extra links appear under a result and even add your own CSS. In Manage results you can pin trusted domains and block the ones you do not want to see, and in Orbit you can write your own rules for ordering results.
Where xPrivo is stronger
xPrivo is open source and can run on your own server, works without an account, keeps conversations only on your device and lets you use your own API keys or local models. It also has a free plan and relies on European infrastructure. If you are mainly looking for a private AI chat, it is a strong option.
What makes MevaSearch stand out
MevaSearch gives everyone search without ads from the first query and accurate results for everyday searches. On top of that you get AI answers with sources, specialist results for developers and researchers, NetKrypton warnings about scam websites, the option to pin or hide domains, !bang shortcuts, dead link markers and removal of tracking parameters from links. There are also separate tabs for images, videos, news, music and podcasts, family profiles, a plan for businesses and an interface in 19 languages.

Which one should you choose
If you want a private AI chat without an account, with open source code and the option to connect your own models, choose xPrivo. If you search the web every day and want accurate results without ads, with AI by Anthropic as a helper, MevaSearch will suit you better.
The two can also complement each other. With the 3 day trial of MevaSearch Lite, you can compare them side by side.
